We got another great package with wonderful free and improvisational jazz music from Acoustic Music Records located in Germany, Osnabrück.
Michael Sagmeister Trio – “Bouncing Around”
This guitarist from Frankfurt, hailed as the “guitar wunderkind of the 1980s” and the focus of amazement, praise and admiration, made his mark as a master of the jazz guitar thanks to numerous albums, worldwide concerts and collaborations with Attila Zoller, John Scofield and Larry Coryell.
“Bouncing Around” demonstrates once again that Sagmeister has long devised his own personal, vigorous handwriting from earlier times when he was influenced by Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery and John Coltrane. Double bassist Martin Gjakonovski and percussionist Michael Küttner, with their grooving rhythm work, form a perfect backdrop to Sagmeister’s elegant performance on the archtop jazz guitar. 12 compositions arose, in a palpable and warm, mature tonality and an absolutely inexhaustible diversity of phrasings. These are works with marked dynamism, finely woven chord progressions and Sagmeister’s typically light-handed solo calls – as the title says, “Bouncing Around”, almost playful, and yet at the highest artistic level. Michael Sagmeister has succeeded in producing a reference work for German jazz guitar – not only for the fans and aficionados of subtle guitar esthetics.
Florian Poser Vibes Trio – “Celestial Encounter”
Sometimes, things in musical life just come together perfectly in an almost “heavenly” manner. One day, I found an email in my in-box from Christian Schröder, the organizer of the concert series “Jazz im Himmelreich”, or Jazz in Heaven (LBS Münster). He wanted to know if I had “something with accordion“ on tap. Actually, I did not, but the query did get my idea engine going and I remembered that a few weeks earlier I had been profoundly impressed by an accordionist named Cezary Paciorek at a concert by the band of the Polish clarinetist Emil Kowalsky, who, alas, has died in the meantime. I contacted him and told him about the query from Münster and my idea of a collaboration. He showed a great deal of interest and had some time as well (which is often a problem). All that was missing was a rhythm section. I found it in two outstanding young musicians. The first was Thomas Hempel, who also resides in Oldenburg, a percussionist whom I have long held in high esteem, and whom I always considered a potential candidate for cooperation. The other was Oliver Karstens, whose earthy and sensitive bass-playing always thrilled me whenever I had the pleasure to play with him. So the band was complete. We then selected the material, and sent out the sheet music and the MP-3 files and we met a day before the concert for our (one and only!) practice session. And after the first few bars, it was obvious that everything thought up beforehand was bearing fruit, indeed, one could say with certainty that all expectations were exceeded by far. As of that moment, it was pure joy! The concert became a “heavenly” pleasure, thanks to a great band, a super audience and Christian Schröder’s perfect organization. That’s what “Jazz in Heaven” should be like.
