It is important to examine Hollywood’s representation of the Middle East, with Hollywood being the most powerful film industry in the world, and with its representation of the politics of the Middle East forming at least part of people’s imagination of the region, however it is also necessary to compare this with how Arabs represent themselves and Others through cinema.

This Monday Film.Woman.Coffee provokes explicit reflection on foreignness and the gendered and racialized discourses of transnationality. The chosen example is Alejandro González Iñárritu’s film Babel (2006). Self-consciously “global” and dedicated to the exploration of intercultural contrasts and conflicts, the narrative of Babel moves back and forth among the Moroccan desert, San Diego, a small Mexican town near Tijuana, and Tokyo, instilling in its audience escalating feelings of anxiety, uncertainty, and “liminal panic”. Lets discuss what message it transmits.

Scorsese rarely directs films about love or family. He concentrates on an individual, who is occasionally violent and who is angry with the corrupt society that is trapping him. His characters are workaholics, driven and feeling alienated from the people around them, including lovers, wives and family. We keep watching these people because we know that there is hope that these people will be redeemed and transformed by their experiences. That hope is rarely rewarded with a happy ending.
